The Hermit shows the first step in Sacred Serpent Spiral Qigong (Spiral Qigong) practice.  Using intention with arm movements the qigong practitioner lifts a ball of qi overhead and guides the energies down into the Central Channel at the top of the head.  This opens up the spiritual energy center of the body represented by acupoint Tian Mu (Heavenly Collector) at the center of the forehead. The Hermit depicts the downward flow of heavenly energy through the Central Channel by the pole in his left hand and his downward facing posture.  Through his mind and body position he brings illumination, represented by the star lit lantern, into physical form.
